As you know, there have been several occasions where there have been complaints against the media, the most recent one involving the Prime Minister and a radio host. You may be aware the Media Complaints Council is constituted by the T&T Publishers & Broadcasters Assocation.
MATT is not part of the complaints procedure though we can and will speak out against attempts to supress free speech and the Fourth Estate. MATT has met with and written to the TTPBA executive to get clarification on how the Media Complaints Council works.
Grant Taylor, the President of the Association, has said, “ The MCC is an independent body and whilst constituted by the TTPBA it is independent of it. This image must be maintained in the public’s eye to not compromise their independence and integrity. When referencing them, please just reference them as the MCC and not as associated with the TTPBA. The TTPBA has no influence over their deliberations and findings.”
We’ve met with the TTPBA and asked for another meeting. Hopefully, we will get one soon on for an outcome that allows redress.
Our members are currently battling the pandemic like everyone else. But with the added front line work, with all the mental and physical health issues that implies. We are still working on policy around our health insurance, pension plans and rewards card. We want to get this right.
Those who could not attend are invited to watch a panel discussion which further catapults us into the digital age.
This month four journalists , Lasana Liburd, Kalain Hosein and Prior Beharry along with moderator and executive member of MATT Mark Lyndersay discuss how they made the transition to digital media which is undoubtedly the future of journalism.
We are also gearing up for a Christmas gathering as we recognise that fraternity and down time is important for journalists more than ever. Our message this month is stay engaged with us. Our membership drives us. Supporting MATT is supporting yourself.
