Join the Media Association and Justice Kathy Ann Waterman-Latchoo for an informed conversation via Zoom about media law with a special focus on defamation laws and how reporters can avoid getting sued.
It is Justice Latchoo’s goal that by the end of session, participants will better appreciate:
- The elements of the law of defamation.
- The main defences to an action for defamation.
- How the law supports freedom of expression and responsible journalism.
Please contact MATT to indicate your interest in participating in the session on March 05 to get a link to join the Zoom session.
Justice Latchoo is a High Court judge and former Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions. Before embarking on her legal career, she was a newspaper journalist for 16 years.
She is the author of the text “Newsroom Law, a legal guide for Commonwealth Caribbean journalists,’’ published by UWI Press. Justice Latchoo also holds a Master of Science degree in legal and forensic psychology from the University of Leicester, UK.
“Newsroom Law”: this is the only book of its kind the market, written by a journalist for journalists in the region. It is meant to guide, comfort and support Caribbean journalists. It seeks to demystify libel law, including the Reynolds “public interest’’ defence.
The book gives journalists a better understanding of the legal framework in which they operate, so they can go about their business with greater confidence.
