The Media Association extends its condolences to the families of Joel Nanton and Anthony Harris on their passing today.

Mr Nanton, the brother of Guardian Media journalist Sampson Nanton, had lost a four-year battle with cancer and his loss strikes the fraternity deep, as we lose his valuable role in teaching and coaching students of journalism at the Ken Gordon School of Journalism.

Anthony Harris was a well-known and universally appreciated sports photographer who covered events with distinction across more than three decades for Guardian Media.

He was mortally injured when a vehicle struck him while riding around the Queen’s Park Savannah. The driver did not stop.

MATT hopes for a speedy investigation and report into the matter.

The incident also should bring greater focus on the enforcement of the legal space afforded to cyclists on the road circling the Savannah and at other locations, including Chaguaramas.

Incidents such as this often end with little justice for the fallen. No-one was held responsible for an incident on the highway when a vehicle collided with cyclists and ended with the death of chef Joe Brown.

Cyclist and boat-builder Brian Bowen was killed in equally mysterious circumstances while riding in Chaguaramas.

It is a tragic day for media workers as we mourn the loss of two valued and cherished members of our fraternity, both talented and dedicated journalists and respected civic citizens.

We stand by as an executive and fraternity to support their families in any way we can and we are all united in our grief .
