On this World Press Freedom day we journalists take the time to acknowledge those who had laid the foundation on which we stand today. We also remember the hurdles cleared to arrive where we are now.

World Press Freedom Day takes on more meaning for me when I consider the many in the field who despite the opposition, resentment, ignorance and fear faced somehow find a way to rise above the challenges and ensure the tenets of a free and fair press are maintained.

Noble laureates Maria Ressa of the Phillipines and Russia’s Dmitry Muratov come to mind.
